Microsoft 365 E3 Plus Purview Suite
Organizations using Microsoft 365 E3 or Office 365 E3 with Enterprise Mobility and Security E3 can add the enterprise Purview Suite for approximately $12 per user per month.
This provides full governance capabilities without moving all users to E5. After the July 2026 pricing updates, E3 plus Purview Suite typically remains at a lower cost than E5 while covering core compliance needs.
Microsoft Purview Suite Add-Ons for Business Premium
Business Premium is not eligible for the enterprise Purview Suite. Microsoft introduced add-ons specifically for Business Premium tenants, capped at 300 users.
Purview Suite for Business Premium is available at $10 per user per month. For organizations that also need advanced security capabilities, Microsoft offers a combined Defender and Purview bundle at $15 per user per month.
The combined bundle delivers most E5 security and compliance capabilities at a significantly lower cost and is often where small and mid-sized organizations land.
Microsoft Purview Suite Licensing Requirements
A few licensing details are easy to miss:
- The enterprise Purview Suite requires E3 or equivalent as a base license
- Business Premium does not qualify for the enterprise SKU
- Purview features are licensed per user, including access to shared locations such as Teams and SharePoint
- When adding Defender Suite to Business Premium, verify which endpoint protection mode is active
These details affect both cost and compliance.
A Note on Microsoft 365 E5: Organizations already on Microsoft 365 E5 have these governance capabilities included natively. There is no separate Purview Suite to add.
