Microsoft Licensing Update: How Agent 365 Manages & Secures AI Agents

Microsoft Ignite 2025 marked a turning point for organizations managing the rapid growth of AI automation.

This year, Microsoft focused on tools. The announcements moved away from buzzwords and toward real solutions. These updates help organizations secure data, govern digital assets, and simplify operations.

AI agents are now being deployed across many platforms. These include Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, ServiceNow, and Adobe. As agent use grows, central control has become critical.

Microsoft introduced Agent 365 to address this challenge.

How Microsoft Agent 365 Redefines AI Agent Governance and Security

In this episode of the Demystifying Microsoft podcast, Wade Walker (VP, Microsoft Alliance at Sourcepass MCOE) review the Agent 365 announcement from Ignite 2025.

What is Microsoft Agent 365?

AI

Microsoft Agent 365 is a centralized platform for managing AI agents across an organization.

It registers and inventories agents built-in both Microsoft and third-party tools. Each agent receives a unique Microsoft Entra Agent ID. This allows identity, lifecycle, and access management from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Agent 365 treats AI agents as first-class digital identities. They follow the same governance and security rules as human users.

Why Agent Governance Matters Now

The number of AI agents is growing fast.

IDC forecasts more than one billon AI agents globally by 2028. Without clear oversight, organizations face higher risks.

Common challenges include:

  • Shadow IT
  • Policy gaps
  • Security incidents
  • Compliance failures

Agent 365 provides visibility and control. It helps teams find unknown agents, assign ownership, and apply policies across environments.

This level of control supports safe and responsible AI adoption.

How Agent 365 Supports Security and Compliance

Agent 365 integrates with Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Purview.

This integration extends security and data protection to every agent. Administrators can enforce least-privilege access and monitor agent activity.

Key security capabilities include:

  • Conditional access policies
  • Real-time monitoring
  • Unified incident response
  • Detailed audit logs

These controls help ensure agents operate within defined rules and regulatory requirements.

The Five Core Capabilities of Microsoft Agent 365

  1. Registry:
A complete inventory of all agents. This includes Microsoft, third-party, and shadow agents. Each agent has a defined owner.
  2. Access Control:
Granular policies enforce least-privilege access. Teams can quarantine non-approved agents and manage rules from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
  3. Security:
Native integration with Microsoft Defender and Purview. Security teams can block risky behavior and prevent data exposure.
  4. Visualization:
Dashboards show agent activity in real-time. Telemetry maps connections between agents, users, and data.
  5. Interoperability:
Support for Microsoft-native, open-source, and third-party agents. Agent 365 works across tools like Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Azure services.

How Agent 365 Differs From Other Agent Management Tools

Many tools focus on a single platform. Agent 365 takes a broader approach.

Agent 365 supports agents built in:

  • Copilot Studio
  • Azure AI Foundry
  • ServiceNow
  • Adobe
  • Open-source frameworks

This creates a single view for governance, security, and compliance. It is especially useful for hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Problems Microsoft Agent 365 Solve

Agent 365 addresses several common challenges:

  • Centralizes agent inventory and lifecycle management
  • Reduces shadow IT and agent sprawl
  • Applies security and compliance controls consistently
  • Enables real-time monitoring and response
  • Supports cross-platform governance

These capabilities help organizations scale AI without losing control.
